Nancy Jezak-Grgas

Nancy Jezak-Grgas, age 63, a beloved wife, mother and sister gently passed away on March 3, 2014. She fought valiantly for over two and one-half years against non-smokers lung cancer.

Nancy was married for over 37 years to Victor Grgas, who served two terms as City Councilman (1982-1990) and was former Mayor of the City of Seal Beach. Nancy was his trusted aide, senior advisor and his steadfast supporter. She worked tirelessly on many issues in the city including fundraising to rebuild the Seal Beach Pier after it was destroyed by a storm in 1983. Nancy was a 30-year member of the Seal Beach Lions Club and helped co-found the Seal Beach Leo's Club, where youth could voluntarily participate in community functions and fundraising in support of the Lions International organization, including sight, hearing and health improvement programs for people around the world. Over the years, hundreds of youths have participated in the Seal Beach Leo's club making it one of the most successful Leo's Clubs in the nation.

Nancy worked professionally for over 40 years, first for Los Angeles County and then later for Orange County as a probation officer handling juvenal cases. She was "all about kids," and worked hard to help youths to become productive citizens in society. After 20 years in probation, Nancy became a day care licensing analyst for the California Department of Social Services for nearly 20 years. She worked diligently to insure that kids, especially infants, were protected and properly cared for in Orange County day care homes. Nancy also loved pets and had many during her lifetime including her beautiful and gentle King Charles Cavalier Spaniels, Sammy and Della. Sammy was a certified therapy dog, and Nancy loved to take her to hospitals and senior homes.

Nancy was the daughter of Richard and Francis Jezak. Her father (along with Harold Butler) was the co-founder of the Denny's Restaurant chain, which was originally started as a donut shop (Danny's Donuts) in Lakewood California in 1953. Years later, Nancy's family sold their interest in the company and moved on to other opportunities.

Nancy is survived by her husband, sons Jeffrey (wife Jennifer), Steven, granddaughters Kiley and Avery (who was born in the same hospital approximately a week before Nancy's passing). She is also survived by her brothers Art and David Jezak, and sister Joyce Cary, along with many in-laws, nieces, nephews and other relatives.

Memorial and Celebration of Life Services are scheduled for Saturday, March 29th from 11:00 AM - 1:00 PM at the Seal Beach Pier. The Seal Beach Leo's Club will be there to assist. Charitable contributions can be made in Nancy's honor to the Seal Beach Leo Club 501c3 Charity # 37-1613518, 1198 Pacific Coast Hwy D305, Seal Beach, CA 90740. Also consider donations to the Vanguard Cancer Center Foundation 750 East 29th Street Long Beach, California 90806.
