Mary "Mimi" McPherson

94, born on January 31, 1919 in Nova Scotia, Canada, passed away peacefully on November 3, 2013. Mimi was one of nine children. Upon graduating from high school, Mimi went to Boston to study Nursing. She returned to Canada upon completing her studies and married Mart McPherson and began raising her family. In the early 50's they moved to Southern California. Mimi worked incredibly hard to build a life for her family in Los Angeles. When everyone else her age was retiring, Mimi went back to school and graduated with a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Sociology and Behavioral Science and attended graduate school. She spent countless hours counseling people in the last days of their lives, and she was beloved by the many families she comforted. Following working as a grief counselor, she worked in the Pastoral Care Department of Little Company of Mary and Daniel Freeman Hospitals where with kindness and compassion she continued a life of service to others. She remained young in her heart and head, and was loved and respected by all with whom she came in contact. She will be greatly missed. Mimi is survived by her son, Paul (Mary) of Rolling Hills Estates; her three grandchildren, Tyson, Danielle (Steve) Vocke, and Sean (Alden) and her five great grandchildren, Zachary, Matthew, Lauren, Sierra and Ian; her brother Greg Vassallo; sister Patsy MacNeil; many nieces and nephews. She is predeceased by her husband, Mart; her son, Martin(Delma); her brothers, John, Frank, Iggie, Bernard and Earle; sister, Lorraine. A Memorial Funeral Service will be held on Saturday, November 16 at 10:00 a.m. at St. Lawrence Martyr Church, 1900 S. Prospect Ave., Redondo Beach, CA 90277. In lieu of flowers donations to the in her name would be appreciated. Please sign the guestbook at www.dailybreeze.com/obits.
