Born July 5, 1928 in Grand Prairie, Texas, the youngest child of E.R. and Allie Slater. She grew up on the family farm outside Lubbock, Texas and graduated from high school shortly before her 16th birthday. Thereafter she joined her older sister Melba as a student at Texas Technological College. While majoring in Home Economics she met her husband of 65 years Albert Sayers who was also a student. The couple both graduated from Tech with Alice teaching school at Cooper High School while Al finished his degree. When Al joined the FBI in 1951, the family moved to Denver and then in 1953 to Manhattan Beach. By then Bill and Kelly were born and they attended Grandview Elementary in Manhattan Beach where Alice taught school. The family spent 10 years in Oklahoma City after Al was transferred in 1960. Alice received her Masters Degree in Education while teaching in the Oklahoma City Schools. Al and Alice returned to Manhattan Beach in 1970. Alice returned to work in the Manhattan Beach schools teaching students at Manhattan Heights Elementary and Foster Begg Middle School until her retirement in 1979. When they returned to California Alice began spending more time on the golf course. She was a long-time member at the Old Ranch Country Club where she once won the Women's Championship. She loved the game and often was a scorekeeper at the LA Open. She and Al played golf in Hawaii, Canada, Scotland, and Mexico during her retirement years. Alice fractured her hip in a fall at home and passed away November 10th while recovering from surgery. She is survived by her husband of 65 years, Al; her children, Bill (Anita) and Kelly of Redondo Beach; grandchildren, Jane Drake of Edwardsville, Illinois, Matt Sparks of Adair, Oklahoma, Jared Sayers of Torrance, and Michael Sayers of Redondo Beach; her great grandchildren, Ian Drake, Emma and Pake Sparks, and Jameson Sayers. She was a wonderful wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother who taught us all well. A memorial service will be held in January. Please sign the guestbook at www.dailybreeze.com/obits.
