Lois Flynn Howard

Lois Flynn Howard passed from this life into eternal life on Sunday, March 30, 2014. A native Californian, Lois was born on November 12, 1927 in Hollywood to Edward and Florence Flynn. She spent many happy years with her older sister, Virginia, in their home on Ogden Drive. A graduate of Hollywood High, she then completed her Bachelor of Arts in Sociology from UCLA in 1950. Lois was an active member of First Presbyterian Church of Hollywood during these years. She participated in Bible studies classes taught by Henrietta Mears and sang alto in one of their many choirs. She met her beloved husband of 56 1/2 years, Dexter H. Howard, in the college group. They were married in 1951. Dexter and Lois moved to Torrance in 1954 and joined Resurrection Lutheran Church, where they were life-long members, forming many deep and lasting friendships. She continued her interest in Bible study leading Bethel and confirmation classes. They sang in the chancel choir under the direction of Lyle Heck for 35 years and both served in various leadership roles supporting the ministry of the church. In later years, she had a passion for dramatic readings and everyone loved her readings of the scriptures for Sunday services. Lois had many gifts and talents. She was an excellent administrative assistant and used these skills both at Los Angeles City Hall and at UCLA. She typed, edited and retyped many of DHH's scientific papers, grant proposals and publications. Like her father, she enjoyed photography and captured images from places around the world. She learned to knit from a neighbor during World War II and made socks and kneecaps for wounded soldiers, using Government Issued khaki colored yarn. Her love of knitting continued throughout her life, making hundreds of baby blankets, sweaters, booties, caps and afghans. She is lovingly remembered by her children, David (Cathy) Howard and Lorraine (Martin) Smith, as well as by her grandchildren, Andrew and Michael Howard and Daniel (Alyson) and Julia Smith. A memorial service will be held Saturday, April 12, 2014 at 11:00 a.m. at Resurrection Lutheran Church, 330 Palos Verdes Blvd in Redondo Beach, CA. Donations in memory of Lois may be made to the Bio-Medical Library at UCLA. Checks should be made out to The UC Regents and sent to: The UCLA Library Development Office, 11334 Charles E. Young Research Library, PO Box 951575, Los Angeles, CA 90095-1575. On the memo line, please indicate in memory of Lois F. Howard for the Bio Medical Library at UCLA. Please sign the guestbook
