John Herrera Sr.
John Herrera Sr., 78, passed away on Sunday, March 16, 2014 with his family by his side. He was born on July 6, 1935 in San Pedro, CA to Evaristo and Mary Herrera. At the age of 18, he married the former Teresa Verdugo. John was employed for many years as a gardener for the Harbor Dept., maintaining all of the local parks in San Pedro. He later worked at DiCarlo's Bakery until he retired in 1992 and moved to Las Vegas. John, along with three of his brothers, was a proud member of San Pedro's National Guard. He was an avid bowler and gardener, but nothing compared for the love he had for the LA Dodgers; baseball season was his favorite time of year. He also enjoyed camping at Three Rivers for many years and anything that included spending time with his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He is survived by his wife Teresa of 59 years, daughters Rebecca (Geno) Godfrey, Rachel (Gilbert) Salazar, Rita Monroe, Dolores (Matthew) Olsen, son John Herrera Jr., brother Andrew Herrera, sister Dolores Figueroa, fourteen grandchildren and sixteen great grandchildren. Visitation will be held on Thursday, March 27 at Green Hills Memorial Chapel from 5-9pm with the rosary starting at 7pm. Funeral services will be held at 10:30am on Friday, March 28, 2014 at Mary Star of the Sea Church, with the burial to follow in Green Hills Memorial Park.
