74, passed away peacefully on Thursday, September 12, 2013 at Providence Little Company of Mary, Torrance after a long and courageous battle with cancer. He was born on December 23, 1938 in Maxwell, California as the sixth and youngest child to W. Roland DuPree and Maude DuPree. At the age of seven, Dick and his family moved to Louisiana where he enjoyed the countryside, fishing, and camping with friends and family. In 1955, he enlisted in the United States Marines. After his discharge, he moved to Elgin, Illinois with his brother Claude where they worked as carpenters. When he returned to Louisiana, he was unable to find work, and so he returned to California in 1960 where he met and married his beloved wife, Beverly, in 1965. He became a superintendent for Geron Furniture in Harbor City, and later Boyd Furniture in Gardena. After retiring from the furniture industry, he worked for Empire Realty in Torrance as a handyman. A quiet and simple man, Dick's greatest source of happiness was being a devoted and loving husband, father, and grandfather. He was most at peace in the creeks and lakes of the Eastern Sierra Mountains above Bishop, CA. It is there that his children and grandchildren caught their first trout with Papa Dick, a legacy that will live on in all of their memories. Dick is survived by his wife, Beverly; daughters, Kathleen Thompson (Colin), Kelly Hecht, Deborah Olsen, Sherri DuPree; son, Kevin DuPree (Evelyn); son-in-law, Daniel Petty; grandchildren, Robert DuPree, Cameron Walter, Grace Thompson, Rosie Rodriguez, Colton Petty, Jennah Petty, Alexandria Thompson, Anthony Thompson, Kolton DuPree, Kailah DuPree, Kendall DuPree; great grandchildren, Dominick DuPree and Ethan DuPree; and brothers, Eugene DuPree, Bob DuPree, and Claude DuPree. He is predeceased by his father, W. Roland DuPree; mother, Maude DuPree; brother, William DuPree; sister, Francis DuPree; and most recently, daughter, Karen Petty. Services will be held at 10:00am on Wednesday, September 18, 2013 at A. M. Gamby Mortuary and Chapel, 25501 Narbonne Ave., Lomita, CA, 90717.
