Obituaries from Two Days Ago

Wieland, Kurt
Kurt Wieland July 29, 1923 - March 4, 2015 Kurt Hugo Wieland was born on July 29, 1923 in Stuttgart, Germany, to Oskar Theophil Wieland and Anna Wieland Herzog. He spent his early years in Arbon, Switzerland. He earned his bachelors of engineering degree in Zurich, and went to work for Swiss Air. In 1956, he and his wife, Anna (Suter) had the opportunity to relocate to the United States for work. They settled in Gardena, and he went to work for Garrett Air Research. In the early 1960s, they moved to Rolling Hills Estates, and raised their children there. Kurt continued his education at the graduate level, and took classes at UCLA. Kurt's passions were engineering (Kurt held 7 patents), his sailboat and anything ocean (he was an avid sailor, spent much time at King Harbor, and sailed into his eighties), art (Kurt loved to sculpt, create glass mosaic, and paint - he painted into his late eighties), gardening and travel. He and Anna enjoyed travelling in their motor home to camp lakeside, and travel throughout the lower 48, Canada and Alaska. They were also fortunate to be able to travel to Europe, Russia, China and Panama. Kurt retired in 1987, and he and Anna relocated to Vista, where they spent their retirement years. In retirement, Kurt teamed with some fellow engineers from Garrett (and a prominent heart surgeon), and they engineered an artificial heart that was successfully placed into a goat. Kurt was predeceased by his parents; his daughter, Esther; two granddaughters, Elizabeth and Julia Wieland; and his brother, Heinz. Kurt is survived by his children, Brigit (Perry) Strongin, Sylvia (Jerry) Rowley, and Ron (Melissa); his former wife, Anna; grandchildren, Kevin and Ryan Strongin, and Robert, Andrew, and Ashley Wieland; nieces, Carmen, Sonya, Gaby, and Corinne; and nephews, Peter, Marco, and Oliver. We will always be grateful to our dad/grandpa for the opportunities and memories he gave us. At Kurt's request, there will be no services. In lieu of flowers, please make a contribution in his name to the Alzheimer's Association, your local animal shelter, or the Palos Verdes Art Center.
